"Press Release"

Illustrated by Lyle Daniel & Kamika Perry

It started with a crackle in my lungs...

Just a faint sound when I breathed. No pain. No panic. Strange enough to notice, small enough to ignore.

I’d just turned 50 and was feeling good, I tell you. Full checkups done. Heart strong. Kidneys fine. Bamsee cleared! I was on top of my health. Myrne didn’t even have to remind me.

Then one night, the crackle got louder. By morning, I went to my doctor for a quick look. One chest X-ray became a rushed CT scan. Then came the words: “lung metastasis… hospital stay… biopsy.”

By 6 p.m., I was in a hospital bed wondering, What the hell just happened?

Weeks later….I noticed simple things like walking to the kitchen left me winded. Saturday night (Aug 9th), I couldn’t find a position to sleep without losing my breath. At 4 a.m., I told Myrne I was going to take myself to the ER. She looked at me as though I had already lost my mind. By 4:45, she’d arranged childcare and packed my bag. Why in the world would I be driving myself to the ER? She had checked me and put that crazy thought to permanent rest.  (From my lips to God’s ass, I think is how the saying goes.)

At the ER, I learned my lungs were likely full of pneumonia. My oxygen levels were dropping fast. My heart was still okay — but not for long. Within minutes, I was surrounded by urgent care teams, tubes, and monitors. I’d thought I was just tired. Turns out, I was standing closer to the edge than I’d ever been — didn’t even see the cliff.

  7. When life brings sickness and uncertainty, it’s easy to feel weighed down. But remember this: God never has an “off” hour. The same God who heard Daniel’s prayers morning, noon, and night is the very One who bends low to hear yours today.

No illness, no weakness, no sleepless night is hidden from Him. The psalmist reminds us, “The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are attentive to their cry.” (Psalm 34:15)

God has not forgotten you; He is with you in every moment. Healing may take time, but His presence brings peace, and His promises give hope.

Be encouraged that the same hands that hold the universe in place also hold you; and He will never let you go.

    With love and prayers,
    Cuz Wayne
